Short answer
Multiply the price by the discount percent and divide by 100 to get the amount saved, then subtract it from the price. For example, 25% off 80 saves 20 and costs 60.
The method
- Saved = price x discount percent / 100.
- Final price = price - saved.
- Or in one step: final price = price x (1 - discount percent / 100).
Examples
- 25% off 80: saved 20, you pay 60.
- 15% off 19.99: saved 2.9985, you pay 16.9915 (a shop would round to 17.00).
- 50% off 120: saved 60, you pay 60.
Two discounts in a row
Two discounts do not add up. 20% off followed by 10% off is not 30% off: 100 becomes 80, then 72, which is 28% off in total. Apply each discount to the new price, or multiply the factors: 0.8 x 0.9 = 0.72.
Frequently asked questions
