Snake strategy tips
Most Snake games end when the snake runs out of room, not because of reflexes.
Keep the snake in long, regular sweeps, stay close to its own tail, avoid cutting the board into closed areas, and plan one or two turns ahead of the head. A fixed path that visits every cell can fill the board without risk.
Habits that raise your score
- Do not rush the dot in a straight line across open space. A long straight run leaves a wall of body you have to go around.
- Turn early. Plan the next two turns before you need them.
- Keep the snake compact, with the head near the tail. A snake that follows its own tail is hard to trap.
- Do not eat a dot that is inside a pocket you cannot get out of. Wait until you have a way out.
- Use the corners: a snake that works from one side to the other leaves a clean empty area.
A route that never traps you
On a board with an even number of rows or columns, such as this 20 by 20 grid, there is a closed loop that passes through every cell exactly once. A snake that always follows that loop can never hit itself and will eventually fill the board. It is slow, because it ignores shortcuts, but it is the proof that a perfect game is possible.
Using the modes
- Walls: use the border as a guide and keep the snake along it.
- No walls: use the wrap for shortcuts, but remember the exit cell has to be empty.
- Slow speed: practise the route and the habits above before moving up.

Frequently asked questions
Is a perfect game possible?
Yes. Filling the whole 20 by 20 board is possible by following a closed route that visits every cell. It takes many moves, but the game allows it.
