How this Snake game works
A short and checkable description of what the game does.
Short answer
The game runs entirely in your browser on a 20 by 20 board. Food is placed on a random empty cell. Your best scores and speed choice are saved in your browser's local storage, and nothing is sent to a server.
The game
- A 20 by 20 board, a snake that starts with 3 cells, and one red dot at a time.
- The snake moves one cell at fixed intervals: 150 ms (slow), 105 ms (normal) or 72 ms (fast).
- You can queue up to two turns so quick key presses are not lost, and the snake cannot reverse into itself.
- The game pauses automatically if you switch to another tab.
Fair food
After each dot is eaten, the next one is placed on a uniformly random cell among the cells the snake does not occupy. It can never appear on the snake, and every empty cell has the same chance.
What is stored
- Your best score for each of the six combinations of speed and mode.
- Your last speed choice.
- Nothing else. There are no accounts and no leaderboards, and nothing leaves your device.
You can clear the stored scores at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.
